Brian's Story

#ItCanHappenToAnyone

Brian, aged 90, is remembered as a thoughtful man who loved history, rugby, good food, and the occasional tot of whiskey. Devoted to his wife of 55 years, he enjoyed travelling, gardening, and long walks with their loyal Westie.

When he passed due to avoidable medical harm, his family faced the overwhelming task of understanding what went wrong, but also not knowing what to do next and where to receive those answers.

“Losing my father Brian was deeply painful, and navigating what followed was overwhelming at times. AvMA provided a clear roadmap through the legal process and gave me hope when the path forward seemed unclear,” remembers Sara, Brian's daughter.

Like many families affected by avoidable medical harm, Brian's loved ones found themselves facing a system that offered little clarity and few answers. With AvMA's support, they were able to navigate the legal and investigative processes with guidance, compassion, and practical advice. It was this steady support that helped them finally secure the answers Brian deserved when his case was settled in 2024.

Sara's message to those in charge of healthcare is clear and simple: “Patients and families deserve honesty and the opportunity to understand what happened — only then can lessons truly be learned.”

AvMA is here for families like Brian’s, providing clarity when everything feels confusing and practical steps when the path ahead feels impossible to navigate.

By giving just £7 a month, your support can help families like Brian’s access expert guidance when they need it most.

Every story matters. Every voice deserves to be heard.

This Christmas, AvMA is shining a light on the people and families behind avoidable medical harm. Their words are not about blame — they are about truth, humanity, and learning so that healthcare becomes safer for everyone.
